BIG STARS: Congratulations to Cedar Shoals senior Clara Starkweather, daughter of Julie Starkweather, named STAR student for Clarke County. The Clarke County system includes Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central, Athens Christian and Monsignor Donovan high schools.

Starkweather chose science department chair Bill Pappas as her STAR teacher. This is Pappas' ninth selection for this honor. Her principal is Ingrid Gilbert, guidance counselor is Ron Jones. This fall Clara plans to attend either Yale or Harvard.
The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) is in its 51st year of STAR Student Teacher Achievement Recognition. Since its inception, more than 21,000 high school seniors have been honored, as well as the STAR teachers selected by these students.
To receive a STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on one test-date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Locally, the program is sponsored by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. STAR students and teachers traditionally have been recognized during a Rotary Club meeting.
Other STAR students included:
• Ian Dunne, son of Richard and Scarlett Dunne, was named STAR student Monsignor Donovan. He chose Sarah Traut (Latin) as his STAR teacher. Principal is Barbara Bankston.
• Alice Hilton, daughter of Nelson and Holly Hilton, was named STAR student for Clarke Central. She chose Ellen Harris (Latin) as her STAR teacher. This is the fifth time Harris has received that honor. Hilton's principal is Robbie Hooker, counselors are Sam Hicks and Lenore Katz.
• Mac Freeman, son of Tony and Janice Freeman of Hartwell, was named STAR student for Athens Christian. Freeman chose Karl Mealor (physics and calculus) as his STAR teacher. This is the fifth time Mealor has received that honor.
Outside the Clarke region:
• Eric Perkerson was named STAR student for Athens Academy. Perkerson chose Ley Brown (honors political science) as his STAR teacher.
