Wok Star offers fusion cuisine

Taking advantage of space in a Winterville commercial building his family bought, Ke "Kirk" Xu has opened up a new restaurant, Wok Star, serving what he calls American-Asian fusion fare.

Wok Star, word play on Rock Star, opened in early August in a strip center next to Winterville Elementary School on Cherokee Road. The restaurant is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the early-morning menu focusing on country cooking, and lunch and dinner offering everything from hamburgers to moo goo gai pan. Apparently, Wok Star is catching on as a steady stream of diners filed in during one recent lunch hour.

"Some customers are coming in two or three times a day for different cuisines," Xu said. "Since Winterville doesn't have restaurants, we're trying to offer different choices."

Members from nearby Winterville churches have been very supportive, too, he said.

Leaning toward a more American -- and country -- cuisine, the Wok Star breakfast menu includes fresh, homemade biscuits with choices of ham, steak, tenderloin, chicken, sausage or just plain buttered. Biscuit prices range from $1 to $2.35. You can add cheese or an egg for 45 cents more.

Biscuits and gravy, grits or carrot muffins are available for $1, and full breakfast plates of eggs, grits and toast or biscuits are $3. Adding sausage or bacon to a breakfast plate costs $1 more and chicken or tenderloin is an additional $1.50

The selections for lunch and dinner are more expansive and diverse, and the menu offers the same choices for both meals, Xu said. Customers can elect to try Asian or American dishes.

"For lunch and dinner we serve basic Chinese food, but we also do some American food, like sandwiches and homemade burgers with half-pound patties," he said.

Wok Star's cook, John Jiang, worked in China before coming to the U.S., Xu said. Jiang is from Guilin, which is noted for its rice noodles, and he applies his talents to making rice noodle soup and stir-fry rice noodles at Wok Star. But Jiang's expertise provides more than rice nood
